Outland first began to form in May of 2008 when Oliver Smith ('Oli') and a former guitarist met on a ward of a mental hospital. While Oli played his synthesizer in his room, the guitarist could be heard over the corridor playing his guitar. It was inevitable that the 2 would become friends and after hearing some of Oli's songs on a cd he had with him the 2 of them started discussing forming a band upon their recovery and release from the hospital. Enter Roman Hajduk ('Romey'), who was a Polish friend of the guitarist's and also played drums. Oli and Roman were introduced in the visitor's room of the ward and after a swift recovery and release from hospital Oli met up with Roman and the guitarist and they started brainstorming ideas for the band. The first idea that was hit upon was to write a bunch of songs to do with the 'environment' and 'climate change' which Oli and the guitarist set about doing. 10 or so songs were written on various topics and the 3 of them then set about rehearsing these songs at the local music studios and practise rooms 'The Forum'. Oli and the guitarist kept writing songs together, all in all about 40 in total, the band also decided after some deliberation to call itself 'Oxygen'. It was decided after 6 months or so that Oli would concentrate on songwriting and playing the synthesizer and it was time to look for a lead vocalist. Enter Anita Bainbridge, a vocalist who lived nearby and saw the advert for a singer on the advert-board in The Forum. After a trial practise with the band Anita was invited to join in February 2009. The sound of the band at this time was a mainly rock orientated sound, with a colouring of synthesizers. Many more months passed while the band rehearsed the songs and then they were given the oppurtunity to play their first gig at The Forum on the coming 'International Day'. Here the band played their first set of 10 songs, and it was here that they were spotted by Bass Guitarist, Jacek Kazmierski ('Jaca'). Not long after the gig he contacted the band and asked if they needed a bass player, which they did and Jacek joined the band. Another 6 months passed while Jacek learnt the songs and it was then that the former guitarist decided to leave the band to pursue other projects. However, it was taken as an oppurtunity on all parts to make some changes, the first being that Oli was able to dig out some songs he had written on his own and put them forward to the band. It was also decided that the band would not look for another guitarist and would instead become an electronic band, and finally the band-name was changed to 'Outland'...
